Gibraltar

Day 48 - Gibraltar

Gibraltar is 2.75 miles long by 3/4 a mile wide and is 1,396 feet high. I am sure that you have heard of the Rock of Gibraltar. The Rock of Gibraltar is a symbol of durability and permanence. With its strategic location at the western entrance of the Mediterranean, "the rock" offers a great military strong point. Gibraltar is only eight miles from Africa at this point and the straits of Gibraltar are 36 miles long. So whoever controls Gibraltar controls the passage between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean waters. Gibraltar is a British Dependency since 1704 much to the anguish of Spain. Gibraltar's population is 30,000 with an ethnic mix of Spaniards, Moors, Arab and the British. The town is charming and it would have been a prefect day except that there were two cruise ships in port which added 5,000 cruise passenger's along with the Spaniard's that cross the border daily to shop duty free. It was very busy in Gibraltar. It was hard just getting down the streets. It was a nice day for me as I got to speak with two of my Children (Sorry Christy that I missed talking with you will call you from France). Weather was lovely over all it was a nice day. Tomorrow Lisbon, Portugal
