Naples, Italy

Day 42 - Naples for Amalfi Coast and Pompeii , Italy

Naples is 2nd busiest port in Italy. It has a population of 2.5 million. We did not see much of Naples because we headed out of Naples for the Amalfi Coast. We took a private tour with our friends, Joanne, Garry, Anthea, Dennis, Colin and Judy. We headed south to Sorrento, Positano and drove along the Amalfi Coast. It is a beautiful and curvy road. This is one of the most beautiful coast lines that we have ever been on. The white stucco homes with red clay roofs are terraced along the hill sides. It is so beautiful. We drove about 90 mins and reached Sorrento. What a beautiful and amazing place. It was fun to wander around the small alleys and streets. Next stop was Positano an even more exclusive town. With steep winding streets and alleys. Next we went to the outskirts of Positano for lunch on a lovey terrace overlooking the sea. We had Caprese made with fresh mozzarella cheese and the ripest red tomatoes, Homemade Pasta and Pizza. After a lovely morning and early afternoon we left the Amalfi Coast for Pompeii. This is defiantly a region that we would like to spend more time in.

Pompeii was destroyed in 79 AD by the volcanic eruption of Mt Vesuvius. Pompeii was buried in about 100 feet of ash and the people we killed by the gases instantly. Pompeii was a large town with about 20,000 to 50,000 people. The ruins of Pompeii are well persevered because of the ash that buried the town. Visiting Popmeii was an awe inspiring experience as the magnitude of excavating this large town and how well it is persevered from being buried for hundreds of years. Pompeii shows the way of early romans and the sophistication of their lives for that time in history, their water system, shops, baths and restaurants and bakeries. A must see, an amazing day! Next Port Civitavecchia the Gate way to Rome.
